Things to consider when planning to undergo a DNA Paternity Testing:

DNA Paternity Testing is a serious matter that should not be taken lightly. Although method used is safe and painless, the technical procedures involved in the analysis and the results of the analysis could literally and metaphorically mean a world of difference and its significance or relevance to your personal life is enormous.

There are many things to consider when planning to undergo a DNA Paternity Test.

1. The reputation of the company with which you entrust your DNA samples for testing and analysis is crucial. Make sure that the company of your choice is ISO 17025 and AABB accredited. ISO stands for International Standards Organization. Being ISO 17025 accredited means that the staff and technology, the performance and quality of the laboratory or company of your choice has been approved by international standards and is therefore expected to yield the highest possible quality service to its clients.

2. Most legitimate DNA Testing Laboratories or companies perform exactly the same tests. Always ask how many alleles will be tested. A good DNA Testing company should at least test 15 alleles.

3. There may be brokers that offer to forward your DNA specimen or samples to other laboratories for analysis. However, these brokers share in the laboratory’s marked-up price. These laboratories, more often than not, provide low quality service for their low prices since they split a part of their fee to the broker. It is always best to deal directly with the laboratory so you can ensure the same fee but with the guarantee and assurance that this amount serves to cover a quality testing and not go to brokers while being given only mediocre, if not low-quality DNA analysis.

4. Make sure that the DNA Laboratory of your choice states clearly that result documents are included in the cost of the test. It may very well happen that a laboratory may charge a minimum or bargain price for a testing but do not include in the testing kit or the result document in the fee. Chances are, you always end up paying a higher amount than you thought you would by paying another cost for the testing kit, and another for the result documents. This means that you end up paying more instead.

5. Although it does not necessarily follow, some small laboratories may just be starting out. Thus, they have limited resources, limited experience and may fall a half-step behind the latest DNA technology and instruments. Always trust companies with established names and practices ethics.

6. Ideally, there are 16 loci to be tested for higher accuracy. Since not all clients know this, some small companies may only examine 5 or 6 loci for lack of proper technology and equipment or some companies may opt to examine less loci to cut on cost and increase profit. Always ask on the number of loci or genes to be tested. Remember, the higher the loci to be tested, the higher the possibility for more accurate and conclusive the results.

7. Some companies or laboratories may offer “free DNA kits.” However, one should always remember that DNA testing is a matter to be taken lightly. These companies may offer ordinary cotton swabs instead of cotton swabs made especially for DNA testing. Aside from the possibility that samples taken may not yield accurate results, these companies or laboratories may, at the end, ask a much higher price for the analysis and result of DNA testing as compared with those who openly charge their DNA Testing Kits!<

8. Companies that offer Economy DNA Paternity Tests guarantee 100% paternity exclusion. However, they also only guarantee 99% paternity inclusion. A 99% paternity inclusion is only equivalent to a CPI (or Combined Paternity Index) of only 100, when it could possibly higher. The higher the CPI offered, the more thorough, precise, accurate and conclusive the results and analysis is. Look for companies or laboratories that offer Premium DNA Paternity Tests that can guarantee a 99.999% paternity inclusion as this guarantees an analysis and result that is 1000 more precise, accurate and conclusive.
